Confectionery with a conscience

October 2012

The Ferrero Group's CSR goals for its factories include developing self-production energy, a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 20 per cent reduction in water consumption per unit of production. In Australia, using its Environmental Management System (EMS) certified to IS014001 for control, the Ferrero factory in Lithgow is well on the way to achieving these goals.
The company has reported decreases in electricity of 20 per cent and 35 per cent in water use per kilo since the EMS was implemented. In five years, waste sent to landfill has reduced from 75 per cent of total waste to 24 per cent in 2012. These achievements have been recognised with a Silver Award from the NSW Government's Sustainability Advantage program. During 2012, Ferrero has started to self-generate energy using tri-generation, which will significantly reduce its need for electricity drawn from the grid and reduce carbon emissions by up to 37 per cent. Ferrero Australia is a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant and has introduced the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines into its new product and point of sale development process. 'Work, Create, Donate' is a Ferrero guiding principle, with the company having national supporter agreements with Foodbank and Brainwave Australia where they provide funds, product and opportunities for staff volunteering. In his introduction to Ferrero's current CSR Report, the company's CEO, Giovanni Ferrero, provided details of the growth in global sales and output while also recording decreases in emissions and energy consumption. "This means that our business model allows us to grow and to invest in the communities where we operate, while diminishing our impact on the environment. That's what sustainability is all about," he said.
